The Centre for Training and Research in Public Finance and Policy was set up as a long term research unit in the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta in 2011. This is a Ministry of Finance, Government of India initiative to promote research in economic and social policies through a better understanding of issues in public finance, public economics and public policy.

Our policy findings are based on rigorous analysis, detailed empirical evidence and in depth institutional knowledge. We seek to disseminate our findings to a wide range of audiences to maximize their impact on policy both directly and by informing public debate.

Our objective is to establish ourselves as an authoritative research unit on public finances, tax and welfare policy, tax law, education, inequality and poverty, pensions, productivity and innovation, consumer behavior and the evaluation of policies designed to promote development in poorer countries.

We are governed by a monitoring committee. The committee consists of:
